BLACK HISTORY MONTH CATALOG DESCRIPTION

This auction truly celebrates Black History Month with a Historical catalog representing one of the most comprehensive 20th and 21st Century African Fine Art collections ever offered to our clients on auction. All the artworks on this auction are illustrated works in the groundbreaking publication “South African Fine Art – The Soweto School of Art” ISBN 978-1-920668-00-6, written by Martin G. Britz. This book is the result of a 33 year-long dedicated study of a specific group of Black African male artists who lived and worked in Soweto, South Africa, spanning the years 1960 through to 2010. The Soweto School of Art is the first black fine art movement to emerge from the African continent.

THE MARTIN G. BRITZ PRIVATE COLLECTION

This selection of rare and historical works included in the sale is from the author, Martin G. Britz‘s private collection. Martin began his art collection 33 years ago in 1984 at the age of 16 while working in the warehouse of his father’s art auction rooms where he first met the artists. During the ensuing years, as their friendships grew and Martin began documenting their histories and artworks, he also began acquiring selected original works of art to be used as illustrations in his book. Martin selected these works specifically for their significant historical and cultural relevance as interpreted and shared by the artists.
